Marijuana is illegal in Kyrgyzstan. Ironically, due to the country’s location in Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan is sometimes considered the “home of cannabis,” as the plant hails from Central Asia. Cannabis grows in the wild, and some farmers may cultivate it as a cash crop.
Medical Marijuana Laws in Kyrgyzstan
As cannabis is illegal in Kyrgyzstan, there are no medical marijuana laws in the country. If caught using or possessing cannabis, the offender may be punished with “deprivation of liberty” (i.e., a prison sentence) for three to seven years.
They may also have their property confiscated. Penalties may be more severe for those cultivating and distributing cannabis in any way.
What to Know About About Medical Cannabis in Kyrgyzstan
There has been some talk of cannabis decriminalization or legalization amongst officials in Kyrgyzstan, but no direct mention of establishing a medical program.
Former presidential candidate Jenishbek Nazaraliev proposed legalizing cannabis to reduce drug addiction, gain tax revenue, and undercut organized crime in 2014. Deputy Prime Minister Tolkunbek Abdygulov suggested legalizing cannabis to improve tourism in the country.
However, these are merely suggestions.
Can You Grow Cannabis In Kyrgyzstan?
It is illegal to grow cannabis in Kyrgyzstan. Sowing cannabis seeds or cultivating the plant is punished with a fine set at 100 to 300 minimum monthly wages or imprisonment.
Cannabis grows abundantly in the wild in Kyrgyzstan and is rarely purposefully cultivated, although it is often harvested.
There is likely trade in cannabis in some regions of Kyrgyzstan. However, as the cannabis is wild, it is unlikely to contain high THC levels.
